Karyotype and Chromosome Mutations

Karyotype- The general appearance or structure of a set of chromosomes within the nucleus of the cell. (p.341)

A Karyotype in humans will show you the 22 pairs of autosomes and the 1 pair of the sex determined chromosome.

Chromosome Mutation
  1. Deletion - loss of all or part of a chromosome
  2. Duplication - when extra copies of parts of a chromosome are produced
  3. Inversion - reversed direction of parts of a chromosome
  4. Translocation - part of a chromosome breaks off and attaches to another chromosome
  5. Nondisjunction - chromosomes do not separate in meisosis
