Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the use of sunlight to convert water (H20) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbohydrates, sugar, starch, and oxygen (which is the waste product)

*Jan van Helmont* (1643)-Trees gain most of there mass from water.

*Joseph Priestley* (1771)-using a jar, candle, and a plant priestley discovered plants realease a substance (now known as Oxygen) to keep the candle from blowing out.

*Jan Ingenhousz* (1779)- concludes that plants need sunlight to produce oxygen.

*~Photosynthesis (Equation)~*

The over all equation equation for photosynthesis can be shown as followed...

*6 CO2 + 12 H2O → C6H12O6 + 6H2O*
Carbon dioxide + Water → sugar + oxygen

*In addition to water and carbon, photosynthesis requires light and chlorophyll (found in cloroplast)

Chloroplast is were photosynthesis takes place.
